Haunted by a tragic past, Mateo is trying to escape and start anew. But what happens when everything they’ve been running from comes knocking at their door?

Withering Dreams is a project created by Moose and Neph with lead coder Jiinh using RPG Maker MV for the 4th RPG Maker Horror Game Jam.

This is our first RPG Maker Game but definitely not our last! I feel like we learned so much from this project and am excited to see what we come up with in the future!

A very solid entry and definitely one of my favourites! The art and presentation was excellent and the story was interesting as well accompanied by lovely music. The gameplay was decent but certainly had some flaws. The canvas back in the beginning looked odd though...

One notable flaw was the whole fetch-quest section in the beginning. Finding all the paints was doable but I got stuck for way too long on finding that tool I needed to remove the painting. It would be nice to have either a visual clue as to where it is in the form of sparkles or a physical item, or at least a hint (which is why the paints was doable: just search all the boxes). Another annoying thing with that fetch quest was all the items you needed for the plants, as there was no direction for what precisely you needed. Having to remember all the keys was a neat idea too, but this wouldn't translate well into a big game you can't complete in a single sitting so keep that in mind. But other puzzles were great! I really like the one where you had to recreate the scene from the picture, however, I would have preferred having to put the correct item down yourself (like in the statue puzzle, however would have liked it if it was not just the one item), or even having to remember the precise location and doing it from the item menu.

As for the horror aspect... It wasn't that scary, but that's okay. It did have some really disturbing moments with the car crash especially, and the monster had an interesting design, but the chase itself wasn't that interesting. The threat of what was behind the door was neat but it didn't really do it for me. The story was integrated neatly by the horror and I think that the monster was only a hallucination due to the past trauma, but this could be wrong. I liked the fact that the appartment broke open at one point and went into a garden, that looked cool.

Other minor complaints:

  • Having to wait for the cellphone tune to play out every time.

But I had a great time! Would love to see more of you.

(Might edit it down later to reduce time especially with searching the screwdriver)

Thank you so much for your detailed and informative review! We appreciate your response and will definitely keep these points in mind when going into future projects (or for a re-make/re-work of this project!)

We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed it and that it was one of your favorite entries! The part where the apartment broke into the garden was one of my favorite areas to work on~

For this project, we were lucky to have such a great musician/sound composer on board. He always has really solid stuff so if you’re ever in the market for a sound person, I highly recommend him!

I can’t wait to take a look at your playthrough when I get a chance this weekend, thank you for linking it!

We’re quite a tenacious team and have a couple projects in mind for the future so definitely keep an eye out!

Ok, so, I got to the puzzle with the gate, gargoyle, flowers... I found a bunch of flowers, including one that looks like the one on the guide, but I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing.

Also, I found an empty water bottle. I can't interact with any sink to fill it up normally and if I click on the sink tile, the game crashes with an undefined list error.

Pretty cool so far though! The only things I can really criticize so far are two: the tiles have a bunch of passability errors, where you can walk on walls an such in certain places.

Also, the possible game over... maybe prompt a player to save before it? Because I got it and had to replay it up to that point again.

Howdy, howdy! Thank you for trying out our game and for the heads up and tips!

We went through and fixed the tile passability errors along with the water bottle issue. We've also implemented a better prompt system to give players a heads up to save by adding the butterflies as a saving point throughout each act.

For the gargoyle/flower puzzle - you'll have to interact with the gate to get a hint for how to unlock it and the guide pieces you find will help you figure out which flowers you'll need.

This was our first RPG Maker project but we had a lot of fun with it and I feel like we've learned a lot! Your game Jam was just the thing we needed to get us to buckle down and start figuring out how to better use RPG Maker. :)

Thank you again!

Glad to hear it! There's gonna be more, so hope you join another one in the future , this game is pretty good so far :)

Hello! I tried to download from the mainlink but it says, "invalid upload". Please help! I would like to play your game. :D

Hey hey! I'm re-uploading the project now with Mac & Windows download and then seeing if we can get a browser version up and running really quick. Thank you for your patience~

Oh that's why! Thank you for the response!

No problem! We did have a few issues with tileset passability that we didn't catch early on and a few other minor edits so we've re-uploaded once again with those fixes.

I hope you enjoy our little game!

I'm sure I will! :D I have one small question. Is it okay to post my playthrough of the game on YT? I'm just small tho (teeny tiny smol), I hope it's okay. Please let me know!

(+2)

Of course you can post a playthrough of it on YT, I'd love to check it out and see your thoughts on it! It's a small game but we had a lot of fun making it!

We'd also love it if you could post a link to our game for it anyone else would like to check it out~ :D
